Who's who in Carter
Meet the inhabitants of Bishop in brand new detective drama Carter on Alibi.

-
Harley Carter (Played by Jerry O’Connell)
Clever, charismatic and charming – and maybe just a little too used to getting his own way – Harley has become a huge star as a detective on America’s biggest TV show, Call Carter. Returning to his hometown to take a break after a public meltdown, Harley finds that he just can’t leave solving mysteries behind. Getting back to his roots and reconnecting with his friends is bringing the best out in Harley – but will fame and fortune eventually beckon him back to Hollywood?
-
Sam Shaw (played by Sydney Poitier Heartsong)
A feisty, hands-on detective, Sam has known Harley since high school and is his oldest and closet friend, although they drifted a little when Harley was in Hollywood living the high life. Sam has risen quickly through the ranks of the Bishop police force and is very happy to see Harley again, although a little bemused about him getting involved in police work. They certainly make a good team though and - who knows? - they might even have a little crush on each other.
-
Dave Leigh (played by Kristian Bruun)
When Harley’s character got stuck on a case in his TV show, he’d turn to his junkie streetwise sidekick Davey Leech to help him out. Ever so slightly based on Davey is coffee truck owner Dave Leigh, Harley’s streetwise pal from way back. Slightly miffed that such an unflattering character was based on him, Dave nevertheless helps Harley with valuable local info and sources, albeit laced with a healthy dose of sarcasm. Is his cutting wit hiding a vulnerable side though?
-
Koji and Dot Yasuda (played by Denis Akiyama and Brenda Kamino)
Koji and Dot are Harley’s Japanese housekeepers who also became his guardians after his mother disappeared. An intimidating couple, they’ve looked after his house whilst he’s been away in Hollywood and view Harley as a son and they are fiercely protective of him, although they’re not particularly big fans of his TV show. Whilst Koji is quiet and intense, Dot is brash and outspoken and, with so many guns stashed around the house, she can be a little too trigger-happy.
-
Vijay Gill (played by Varun Saranga)
Harley’s fast-talking and enthusiastic junior showbiz agent, who dreams of being a big player one day. When Harley ignores calls from the TV studio, Vijay is tasked with taking him back to Hollywood. But Harley doesn’t want to go yet – which lands Vijay in hot water because, if he goes back empty handed, they won’t renew his US work visa. So, as a Canadian citizen, he’s stuck in Bishop for the time being - which might not be too bad as he loves getting involved in Harley’s adventures.
-
Chief Angus Pershing (played by John Bourgeois)
The police chief of Bishop and Sam’s boss, Angus is a hard-working, no-nonsense copper who wants Harley nowhere near a crime scene. So, understandably, he’s none too pleased when Mayor Grace Hamilton offers Carter the position of consulting detective to the Bishop Police Department. Although he can come across as short-tempered and hard-hearted, he is very fond of Sam and his admiration for her slightly softens the frustration he feels that Harley has become her quasi police partner.
-
Nicole Walker (played by Joanne Boland)
If Nicole, Bishop’s talented pathologist, seems a little too clever to be working in a small town, it’s because she turned down quite a few high-profile jobs in big cities as she preferred the relaxed atmosphere of Harley’s old stomping ground. Good buddies with Sam, often hanging out after work, she’s a little taken aback when Harley starts getting involved in police work but, as something of a nonconformist herself, she recognises the value of having a unique approach to crime-solving.
-
Mayor Grace Hamilton (played by Sherry Miller)
Smart, sassy and just a little bit wily, Mayor Hamilton is impressed with Harley cracking his first real-life case and sees him as a potential tourist attraction for the town, something she feels Bishop really needs. So, to get him to stick around as long as possible, she offers him the position of consulting detective to the Bishop Police Department, much to the chagrin of Chief Angus Pershing. It’s probably just a coincidence that it happens to be election year and the fortunes of Bishop will reflect well on her (!)
