Set in Toronto, Canada in the late 19th century, Murdoch Mysteries is based on the best-selling novels by crime writer Maureen Jennings and follows the adventures of Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) who uses innovative inventions and pioneering forensic techniques to crack cases.
Murdoch is aided by the eager but inexperienced Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris), sceptical but supportive boss Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) and accomplished pathologist and Chief Coroner at City Morgue, Dr Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy), who becomes Murdoch's staunchest supporter and soulmate.
Murdoch's romantic relationship with Julia goes through some twists and turns this series and Murdoch also has to confront his troubled past and face his estranged father when he returns to British Columbia. Along the way, he's called on to solve a series of killings that are being attributed to a werewolf, look into the bizarre case of a mathematics professor who was poisoned in a very unique way, and temporarily team up with a Scotland Yard detective who believes Jack the Ripper has arrived in Canada.
And, when Murdoch investigates what appears to be the perfect murder on a college campus, he encounters academic prodigy James Gillies (Michael Seater), little knowing that this gifted student would go on to be his arch nemesis!
Real-life historical figures this series include illusionist Harry Houdini (Joe Dinicol) who is embroiled in a seemingly impossible robbery that takes place next door to his magic show and sharp-shooting legends Buffalo Bill Cody (Nicholas Campbell ) and Annie Oakley (Sarah Strange) who Murdoch meets when a performer is killed during a bullet catch trick at their Wild West show.
