Miss Phryne Fisher
Our glamorous lady detective, The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher, swans into early 1929 Melbourne, fighting injustice with her pearl-handled pistol and her dagger-sharp wit. Never forgetting her experiences in the War, her upbringing in the back-alleys of Collingwood or the devastating loss of her sister, Phryne launches herself into a new slew of murder cases with relentless enthusiasm.
Our very modern heroine makes sure she is always the centre of attention and relishes every one of life?s moments, hunting lost treasure and washed up bodies at the seaside, taking over the direction on a silent movie set, or tracking lost jewels through the world of high fashion or at the football field.
Pleased Jack seems finally convinced she?s an asset his investigations, Phryne cannot resist flirting with him at any opportunity to see his cheeks turn pink. However, once Phryne senses Jack?s unfinished business with his former in-laws however, she has carte blanche to throw herself into romantic distraction with renewed zeal ? even though it?s obvious even to Jack?s ex-wife, Rosie, how large she still looms large in Jack?s life.

Detective Inspector Jack Robinson
Jack returned from the War a changed man ? a complicated situation that saw him estranged from his wife.
He remains focused on his police work where his ironclad moral compass sees him operating, unwaveringly, within the law. Jack admires intelligence and resourcefulness, and does not suffer fools lightly.
Jack grew up in working-class Richmond. He joined the police force before the war, rising to the rank of Senior Constable before the call of duty saw him enlist for military service.
The relationship between Jack and Miss Fisher is underpinned by a sexual tension that they are unable to consummate and while Phryne?s initial intrusions into his investigations irritate Jack beyond comprehension, he comes to rely on Phryne?s insight and her entertaining banter.

Dorothy ?Dot? Williams
Dot has hit her stride as Miss Fisher?s companion and assistant in Series 2 with a sense of confidence and pride. This confidence is jeopardised, though, as her fears threaten to get the better of her in perilous situations: such as being stranded in a hostile rural township, being forced to take the wheel or a racing car disguised as a Russian, and coming face-to-face with her wayward sister in one of the city?s most exclusive brothels! As her romance to Hugh Collins progresses, though, Dot begins to realise how much marriage could complicate her place in the Fisher household?
-
Constable Hugh Collins
Hugh, continuing to work hard to impress his boss, gradually gains more responsibility ? whilst still happily courting his sweetheart, ?Dottie?. His love for Dot is unfaltering; despite putting his foot in things at every turn and wishing he was a better man, for her sake. In Series 2, Dot will see another side to Hugh, with his determination to lure young tearaways from street gangs by teaching them the art of formal boxing. When he reveals a painful childhood memory, Dot finally understands what drew him to the police force in the first place.

Aunt Prudence
Mrs Prudence Stanley enters Series 2 as conscious as ever of her social reputation, particularly as she faces life?s challenges - a fractured schoolgirl friendship, unsavoury truths about her family history unearthed through the spiritual realm, a scandal involving the charitable organisation she sits proudly on the Board of, and the possible culpability of her husband in a mining tragedy ten years earlier. Prudence continues to fundraise and mix with the ?right? people. This brings her into the usual conflict with her niece Phryne ? whose path usually crosses with the all the wrong people.
